South Indian Rhythm Seminar by B.C. Manjunath

From 18th to the 20th of January 2008, the conservatory of Amsterdam hosted a series of lessons on Carnatic music theory by mridangam virtuoso B.C. Manjunath. Those lucky enough to assist the seminar witnessed the fascinating way in which he approaches rhythmic improvisation, in which structural, mathematical thinking and natural expressivity go hand in hand. The following videos are some of the solos he played for us, plus one of the exercises we did as a group. Click to Play Solo on Thursday January 17th 2008. Click to Play Solo on Saturday January 19th 2008 Click to Play Here, Manju performs with us an exercise on rhythmic superimposition (anuloma-pratiloma).
